Starting the day off right is sooo incredibly important, so why not start it off by taking care of yourself? You are doing yourself a huge favor by focusing on your needs before focusing on everything else you have to do (and probably for other people – your kids, significant other, your boss, or whoever it may be!). Burnout is real people! By developing a morning self-care routine, you are ultimately setting yourself up for success.
I have written this post to give you a glimpse at how I start my days off right by taking care of myself, so that I can be the best version of myself throughout the day and to avoid any possible version of burnout. I hope this post inspires you to think of ways that you can give yourself a self-care routine as well!
DRINK AT LEAST 8 OZ OF WATER
This is, more times than not, the first thing that I do when I get up in the morning. I don’t know what it is, but there is just something about waking up and drinking a cold glass of water. It makes you feel refreshed and more awake!
I am absolutely obsessed with having a cup of coffee in the morning, but I always have my cup of water before I treat myself to my coffee. Caffeine can dehydrate you, so it is especially important to drink water before (also after) your cup of coffee.
TAKE A MULTIVITAMIN
I find that taking a multivitamin in the morning helps me stay energized and alert throughout the day. I typically will take my vitamins and drink my 8 ounces of water at the same time because I feel like that just makes the most sense! 🙂 That or I take it with my breakfast.
Currently, I have been taking Nature Made Adult Multivitamin Gummies (yes, I said gummies), and I have no complaints! I haven’t really found one specific brand of vitamins that I hold true by, so if you have one, let me know!
EAT A PROTEIN-FOCUSED BREAKFAST
Protein provides your body with the fuel that it needs to stay alert and energized, not only physically, but mentally as well! I remember growing up my mom always told me to eat some protein (usually eggs) for breakfast if I had a big test that day at school or had to stay physically energized, like for tennis camp or something like that. To this day, I try to include some type of protein into my breakfast, so that I can stay sharp! Here are some breakfast ideas that include some type of protein:
- Old fashioned scrambled eggs (duh.)
- Fried eggs or “sunny side-up” on top of wheat toast (one of my favorites!)
- Toast w/ peanut butter
- Banana, peanut butter, and honey smoothie
- A spoonful of peanut butter mixed in w/ oatmeal
Helpful tip: To give you an extra boost of energy mid-morning, eat a handful of almonds! I always pack a little bag of almonds to bring to class/work to eat around 11 a.m.
10-15 MINUTES OF RELAXATION EXERCISES
When I start my days off with a relaxation, meditation, or yoga exercise, I feel so centered and just completely ready to take on whatever the rest of the day decides to throw at me. Personally, I use an app called Meditation Studio to do my morning meditation exercises. I love this app because it makes it easy to find a meditation that best suites your needs at that very moment, whether it be to relieve some stress, reduce anxiety, increase your confidence, or just to simply help you relax.
For my morning self-care routine specifically, I really like the Honor Your Strengths guided mediation under the Confidence category in the Meditation Studio phone app. I love how this exercise gets you to be present with yourself, then moves towards letting you think about and realize what you appreciate about yourself. Such a great way to begin your day!
10-15 minutes is all it takes!
When I do these exercises, I try my best to find a quiet place where there are the least amount of distractions as possible. Let’s be real, I live in a studio apartment in Chicago where cars are honking their horns at 6 a.m. and there is liiiterally no secluded space. For me to get comfortable and to have little to no distractions, I usually just plug in some earphones and close my eyes while doing my meditations. You just gotta work with what cha got sometimes, and that’s okay!
Now that I’ve gotten some great insight and am feeling centered thanks to my meditation app, I try to continue this positivity, not only throughout the rest of my morning, but throughout the rest of my day as well. The way I do this is through positive self-talk. It’s exactly what it sounds like…you talk to yourself in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Kinda like a pep-talk before a big game! I always feel much more in tune with myself after my meditation exercise, and by giving myself little confidence boosters here-and-there during the day, it makes it easier for me to stay confident in whatever tasks I have to do.
Here are some of my own examples:
- Everything I do, I do with a purpose
- I am worth it
- I deserve the best
- I am confident in my abilities
- I am making progress towards my goals
- I am capable of helping others
- I love myself just the way I am
Is it a weird feeling to talk to yourself? No doubt. Does it help you stay positive in your mood and actions? Most definitely.
Thanks for reading my daily morning self-care routine! I truly hope that reading this has given you new ideas or inspired you to start (or continue) a morning self-care routine for yourself. You deserve it!
